1st MarDiv's Barrett to be 17th SgtMaj. of Marine Corps

Sgt. Maj. Michael Barrett, the current Sgt. Maj. of 1st MarDiv, has been selected to serve as the Commandant's senior enlisted advisor. Barrett recently returned from Afghanistan, where he served as the sergeant major of Regional Command Southwest and I MEF Fwd.


Barrett brings with his 30 year career extensive infantry and combat experience, serving as a scout sniper and platoon sergeant in the Gulf War and two combat tours in Iraq. Additionally, Barrett served as the company gunnery sergeant and Marine liaison to the US Secret Service Camp David, Presidential Retreat; a drill instructor at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego; chief instructor at Scout Sniper School at Marine Corps Base Quantico, VA; and as the top enlisted Marine at Recruiting Station Cleveland.

"He's the best of the best," Amos said in an interview with the Marine Corps Times, "Sergeant Major Barrett, through his long and distinguished service to our nation, has demonstrated that he is particularly well-suited to serve as my senior enlisted advisor through the challenges ahead."

Sergeant Major Barrett’s personal awards include the Bronze Star Medal “V” in lieu of 2d award, Meritorious Service Medal in lieu of 2d award, Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal “V” in lieu of 4th award, Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal in lieu of 3d award, Combat Action in lieu of 2d award and the Presidential Service Badge.
