MEMBERSHIP ELIGIBILITY

Membership is open to those who served in the 1st Marine Division at any time since its formation in 1941, to include those serving with attached or supporting units, such as corpsmen, aviation units, Seabees, ships, other regiments, battalions and companies.

Associate membership is available to spouses, children, parents, or guardians of persons living or deceased, who are or were members of the 1st Marine Division Association.

Individuals who are not eligible for regular or associate membership are eligible for our newest membership: Friends of the Association. Eligibility includes service members who have served in units other than the 1st Marine Division and non-military individuals who are interested in supporting 1st Marine Division Association outreach programs and scholarship program.

WHY JOIN?

There are two reasons why most members join: first, because it is a means of re-establishing and/or maintaining contact with those who served with the Division; second, to support a unique Scholarship Fund that assists in the education of dependents of deceased or totally and permanently disabled 1st Marine Division veterans.

TAKING CARE OF OUR OWN

As a Memorial to fallen comrades, the Association established a Scholarship Fund in 1953. This is supported by income from reunions and the PX/Book Store, by investment interest and by gifts from our members and friends. Not one penny of donations to the Scholarship fund has been used for any purpose but Scholarship grants. Over 550 students have received grants or nearly $2,000,000 since the inception of the fund. All administrative expenses are met by the Association, which was founded in 1947 as a non-profit organization.

REUNIONS

Since 1947, the Association's annual reunion has provided the ideal opportunity for members to reconnect with former "Cobbers" or fighting hole buddies and to perpetuate the memory and spirit and comradeship in the arms of those who served together. A Memorial Service and participation of a Marine Band is an important part of each reunion. Smaller unit reunions or "mini-reunions" are also conducted as part of the association reunion. Also, each year around 1 February, multi-day commemoration of the Division's activation is held at Camp Pendleton.
