1st Marine Division Headquarters, May 20, 2011. Marines and Sailors gathered Friday in a ceremony honoring the Marines and Sailors killed in Afghanistan. Tribute was also paid to British and Georgian troops that fell under the Division's command.
The Afghanistan battle streamers were added, recognizing the division's service in Afghanistan, and the first time in Marine Corps history that the 1st Marine Division has deployed to Afghanistan. While serving in Operation Enduring Freedom, the division conducted seven major operations and 45 others, including historic battles in Marjah, Sangin, and Bahram Chah.
